Balclutha Activities

Balclutha - the Gaelic name for "Town on the Clyde" is situated on the banks of the mighty Clutha River.

Balclutha is also the gateway to the Catlins Coast and Southern Scenic Route. Balclutha is approximately 80km to Dunedin (1 hour travelling time), and 55km to Dunedin Airport (45min travelling time).

While in Balclutha you might like to:

  • Catch a trout, rainbow trout or salmon in the Clutha River
  • Jet-boat ride up/down the river
  • Take a leisurely walk along the banks of the river known as the Blair Athol Walkway
  • Take a drive along the river to visit the Tuapeka Punt and continue your drive to Beaumont and return
  • South Otago Museum has heaps of history

Visit any of the little towns within the Clutha Country District

  • Lake Waihola – an inland tidal lake famous for reflections and black swans
  • Lawrence – an area rich in gold-mining history
  • Beaumont – a good example of a country pub

The Catlins and Southern Scenic Route
