Balclutha Activities
Balclutha - The Gaelic name for "Town on the Clyde" is situated on the banks of the mighty Clutha River.
Balclutha is also the gateway to the Catlins Coast & Southern Scenic Route. Balclutha is approximately 80km to Dunedin (1 hour travelling time), and 55km to Dunedin Airport (45min travelling time).
While in Balclutha you might like to:
- Catch a trout, rainbow trout or salmon in Clutha River
- Jet boat ride up/down the river
- Take a leisurely walk along the banks of the river known as the Blair Athol Walkway
- Visit Peggydale - the tourist centre of South Otago where you can peruse a large selection of NZ souvenirs
- Take a drive along the river to visit the Tuapeka Punt and continue your drive to Beaumont and return
- South Otago Museum has heaps of history
- Visit any of the little towns within the Clutha Country District
- Lake Waihola - an inland tidal lake famous for reflections & black swans
- Lawrence - an area rich in gold-mining history
- Beaumont - a good example of a country pub
Kaitangata - has rich coal mining heritage & is suited to fishing & whitebaiting opportunities
Tapanui - access to recreational park of Blue Mountains
Owaka - magnificent museum & information centre
Clinton - three Clydesdale horses represent the country "agriculture background" sheep, deer & dairy farming
Catlins & Southern Scenic Route
